Design Statement

Since all of the action of the play takes place in the hold of a wooden sailing ship, I suggested to the director that the sound should be “woody”.   Such ships creak constantly.  I designed an underscore of creaks and very, very low moans that played throughout the play.  The play is very episodic so for transitions, I used a combination of ship’s bell sounds and creaks to signal a change followed by very “woody” low string samples chosen to accent the action just finished and that which was about happen.  The folk song Botany Bay was sung by the cast members.  The scene transitions sounds were played in surround to envelope the audience in the mood.
