Design Statement

It was important that the score for Pentecost represent the clash of cultures, sounds and languages; western timbres colliding with eastern sounds - folk instruments contrasted with their classical counterparts.

The arrival of a group of multi-ethnic refugees creates yet another layer of sounds and music: the inherent order in the sounds of an ancient church; the disorder of language and the clash of cultures brought by the fugitives; and the chaos and confusion of the police action which eventually violates the church. At the center of all of this is the only silent character in the play - an undiscovered fresco that may rewrite history. In the end, the conflicts eventually claim lives and the painting. As we hear it crumble from the wall, we hear the echoes of all that was lost.
