Design Statement

Love Letter is a theatric play about two characters who lived in Taiwan in 1950’ s - an outgoing boy and an introverted girl. The girl later on immigrated to the United States, and they communicated with each other by writing letters, for a life time. The entire play is structured by oral presentation of their letters; the shifting of time is created when letters written by characters at different age is read aloud.

The music of the play starts with harp playing steady rhythm, imitating a “tick tock sound” to create a mood of time flow. The prelude is the main theme of time; it tells you how two people have changed when time passed location altered. Piano is the main instrument in this play; the melody it plays is a 3-beat Waltz that starts with major chords, but followed by minor ones. The major/minor changes indicating the life of the two characters, which under time changes and letter communication, is a rotation between joy and sorrow. The music ends with the sound of harp—just like when it first started.
